Lagos Takes Bold Steps to Restore Environmental Order and Enforce Laws
Enforcement of Lagos Environmental Laws underscores the government's unwavering commitment to preserving the city's ecological balance and safeguarding its future.
Naija NewsBurrow Unveils Lagos' Environmental Drive – A Deeper Dive
In the heart of Lagos, a transformative environmental initiative is taking root. The Lagos State government's resolute commitment to enforce environmental laws and restore the city's ecological balance has ignited a fervor for change that's impossible to ignore.
Reclaiming Nature, One Step at a Time
Naija NewsBurrow Press Team delves into the heart of this movement, led by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. The government's mission is clear: to cleanse the city of environmental infractions that have long plagued its landscape. The drive to enforce these laws aims to restore the natural order of things, ensuring a safer and more sustainable future for Lagos.
Wahab's leadership on this journey is unwavering, as he marches alongside state officials, including the Special Adviser on Environment, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretaries, and heads of agencies. Together, they embarked on a recent expedition, traversing areas like Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Lekki Phase 2, and Iru Kingdom, with one goal in mind – to inspect and address the pressing issues of environmental degradation.
A Canal Path in Peril
The Gedegede community in Lekki Phase 2 is at the epicenter of this struggle. Here, some residents have encroached upon the canal path, narrowing the primary channel. This reckless land grab has the potential to result in devastating flooding, putting the assets of many at risk. The government's stance is unyielding – there's no turning back.
Commissioner Wahab questions the motives behind such actions, asking, “Why are people being so reckless in the cause of trying to grab land and make money at other people's expense?” It's a sentiment echoed by many who witness the devastation caused by these infractions.
Dodan Barracks – Blocking Water Passage
Dodan Barracks, once a symbol of strength, now presents another challenge. Built structures block the natural flow of water, a critical element in Lagos' environmental equilibrium. In response, notices have been served, and a meeting with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) and the commander is imminent. Demolition is on the horizon to restore the water's path and secure the primary channels.
Obalende's Lost Greenery
Obalende, another battleground in this environmental war, has witnessed a transformation that the government finds lamentable. Once lush green spaces have been converted into motor parks. Macgregor canal's path, too, is blocked. The path ahead is clear – serve notices to vacate and return this area to its former natural glory.
Community Voices and Unwholesome Practices
The Gedegede community in Lekki Phase 2 has not been silent. Petitions have been submitted, shedding light on the unwholesome practices of developers who have encroached upon the right of way, endangering property owners in the process. The government is committed to addressing these grievances and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
A Royal Partnership for a Greener Lagos
During the inspection, the environment team received a warm welcome from the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdul Wasiu Lawal. The monarch praised their resourcefulness and commended Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu for assembling this dedicated team. Oba Lawal also expressed a desire for a partnership between the state government and Iru Kingdom, setting aside 15,000 square meters for a green park – a beacon of hope for a greener Lagos.
A Call to Action
In his remarks, Rotimi-Akodu lamented the nonchalance of business owners and companies in maintaining clear drainages. He urged residents to take responsibility by regularly cleaning the tertiary drains at their homes and businesses, thereby complementing the government's year-round efforts.
