The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has recently released its Food Price Watch report, and the findings are concerning. In August 2023, there was a continuous surge in food prices, affecting essential commodities such as beef, tomatoes, beans, garri, and yam, among others. This surge in food prices is a matter of grave concern, and it's sending shockwaves through households across the nation.

The Alarming Surge in Food Prices

According to the NBS report, the average price of 1kg of boneless beef, which was N2,141.18 in August 2022, skyrocketed by a staggering 30.75 percent to N2,799.51 in August 2023. The increase in the price of local rice is equally alarming, with a year-on-year rise of 62.68 percent, from N454.10 in August 2022 to N738.74 in August 2023. Even on a month-on-month basis, the price of 1kg of local rice surged by 13.04 percent from July 2023.

Brown beans, another dietary staple, witnessed a significant increase of 27 percent year-on-year, rising from N545.61 in August 2022 to N692.95 in August 2023. Similarly, the price of 1kg of yam tuber surged by 42.80 percent year-on-year, from N403.65 in August 2022 to N576.39 in August 2023. The cost of garri, a popular carbohydrate source, also experienced a sharp rise, increasing by 49.16 percent year-on-year.

State Disparities in Food Prices

A closer look at the state-by-state analysis reveals some startling disparities. residents bore the brunt of surging beef prices, with the highest average price of 1kg of boneless beef recorded at N3,790.02. In stark contrast, had the lowest price at N1,835.71. When it comes to local rice, recorded the highest average price at N903.26, while had the lowest at N529.72.

Imo State residents faced the highest average price for 1kg of brown beans at N1,087.14, whereas Kogi once again had the lowest price at N480.34. In terms of yam tubers, recorded the highest average price at N1,030.71, while recorded the lowest at N328.71.

The Inflation Dilemma

In light of these soaring food prices, the Managing Director of Bullion Go-Neat Global Limited, Olufemi Ajadi, has issued a fervent plea to the Federal Government. He implores the government to take urgent measures to combat inflation, as it is wreaking havoc on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

Ajadi's appeal underscores the multifaceted challenges Nigerians face. Inflationary pressures in the economy, coupled with the high cost of foreign exchange, multiple taxation, and poor infrastructure, are conspiring to make life increasingly difficult. Entrepreneurs, the lifeblood of any thriving economy, are finding it harder than ever to operate successfully in this climate.

“As our country celebrates 63 years of independence, I therefore reiterate our call for the government to put things in place and help our economy to grow,” Ajadi emphasizes.

Meanwhile, the NBS data also shed light on another alarming issue – the state of road safety in Nigeria. The North-Central region of the country recorded the highest number of and casualties in the nine months leading up to Q1, 2023. These statistics encompassed data from Q3 and Q4 2022, as well as Q1 2023.

During the fourth quarter of 2022, there was a 6.01 percent increase in road traffic crashes compared to the previous quarter. Fatal and serious cases surged, with minor cases experiencing a decline. Notably, North-Central Nigeria bore the brunt of these accidents.

The Ongoing Transportation Cost Challenge

As if the rising food prices and road safety concerns weren't enough, the cost of transportation has also spiked. According to the NBS Transport Fare Watch for August 2023, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city increased marginally. Year-on-year, the increase was a staggering 121.81 percent, further squeezing household budgets.
